Back Pain

Recovering from Sciatica: A Mount Albert Physio's Guide

28 May 20266 min readBy City Physio Auckland

Sciatica describes pain that travels from the lower back into the leg, often with tingling, numbness or weakness. With the right plan most cases improve significantly in weeks, not months.

Understand what is happening

Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It usually comes from irritation of a nerve in the lower back, sometimes from a disc, sometimes from joint or muscle tension around the nerve.

Early relief, the first week

Goal is to settle the nerve and keep gentle movement going.

  • Avoid prolonged sitting, change position regularly
  • Try short, easy walks several times a day
  • Use heat for muscle tension, ice for sharp flare ups
  • Avoid heavy lifting, deep forward bends and long drives

Physiotherapy that works

At our Mount Albert clinic we combine hands on treatment, nerve mobility work and graded strength exercises. Most plans are 4 to 8 sessions over several weeks.

Red flags, see a doctor urgently

Most sciatica is not dangerous, but a few signs need urgent medical review.

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Numbness around the saddle area
  • Rapidly worsening leg weakness
